Empowerment

What does ‚empowerment‘ actually mean?

Translated from English, empowerment stands for Self-empowerment, self-competence or also Self-empowerment. This term is primarily used in a political context where structurally disadvantaged groups are concerned. These are, for example, people affected by racism, sexism, ableism or poverty.

If the translation and meaning of Empowerment the keywords move to the right „Self“ and „Power“ resp. „Empowerment“ in the foreground.

It shows the inner strength and resources that a person can discover for themselves in order to represent and shape their interests. This applies to both individuals and groups.

In short: The aim of an empowerment process is, on the one hand, to support people in taking steps towards self-help and, at the same time, to give them the power (power, strength) to make themselves independent of support.

“"A world designed entirely from an empowerment perspective would definitely be free of discrimination [...] Can such a world even become reality? [...]"”
Tarik Tesfu

Protected spaces are a basic element of empowerment work. This means that people affected by the same mechanisms of oppression come together to share similar experiences. Their experiences and feelings are not questioned in this space.

Further methods and information on dealing with discrimination and racism can be found in the handbook.
